East Africa boasts
the second longest barrier reef in the world,
stretching from the coast of Somalia along Kenya to
southern Tanzania. It provides a food source and
shelter to a vast array of marine life including the
majestic whale shark
and manta ray. Kenya also strives in marine conservation and
has set up protected breeding sites for sea turtles along
the coastline. For the diving industry, environmental
friendly moorings have been installed to avoid damage to
corals by anchors.
The Kenyan coast
is among the worlds best sites for whale shark
encounters. These gentle giants roam the worlds
oceans in search of plankton rich waters. They can
reach lengths u p to 12 meters and weigh 6 tons. Good
sightings in Kenya are in the months of Sept/Oct and
Jan /Feb. Easily spotted by boat, our captains
slowly approach the whale shark and then stop the
boat nearby. Under the watchful eye of our staff,
the divers may enter the water with mask and fins
and fullfill every diver's dream, of swimming with
the largest fish in the ocean in its natural
habitat. We do not, however, allow any handling of
the animals. Transportation between Dive Bases
All non-resident divers are transported to and from
the Buccaneer dive base of any dive they are booked
on with us free of charge as long as they are
staying within the Mombasa area. |
